Parents need to pass on traditions and culture onto children to help establish a sense of belonging and identity. Instilling morals and values helps build the child up but parents must also encourage children to explore other cultures and be open to new ideas. The growth of the identity of a person starts at home. Strong support equals strong self-identity.
A strong connection to family and strong family ties helps a child know their identity and where they belong. Also helps with defining home and any insecurity with acceptance that many TCK’s have difficulties with. A strong family base as well as friendships helps establish identity. Getting out into the community and joining clubs and teams can help kids assimilate into the culture and make friends. Staying in contact with friends and family is much easier now with social network services like Facebook, Skype and twitter.
Celebrate the differences of being a TCK and be appreciative of the unique opportunity to be exposed to these experiences and to become culturally aware and to broaden your view of people and the world around us instead of looking at it as a negative thing.
