Will being a Third Culture Kid prove to be an asset to society?
- Studies show that third culture kids are four times more likely to earn a bachelor’s degree
- TCK’s tend to be more academically achieving - 40% of TCK’s earn an advanced degree - Educators, Doctors, Medicines, Lawyers are the common careers of TCK’s - TCK’s tend to be linguistic and relatable to many cultures therefore making them unique in the workforce. - The ability to travel and live anywhere in the world can also be an advantage How likely it will occur: This will definitely happen and is already happening in the world around us. Just the multi-cultural experience can really make a difference when going into the workforce with these unique qualifications. |
Is migration and the rise of TCK’s a threat to traditions and culture, raising a generation of children with confused identities?
- Because of globalization and migration, intermarriage has become more common and many children today can tell you how many countries they come from but may not be able to tell you which one they consider home. Many people now come from countless places, have different passports and citizenships, their family is spread across the globe and the move from place to place. So the definition of “home” is a challenge.
- Not being able to define “home” or where you come from, what are your beliefs and why you have them can really confuse a child growing up especially in their teen hood where acceptance and belonging is so necessary to healthy growth. How likely it will occur: - To a certain extent, yes many ways of thinking and beliefs will be lost since times are rapidly changing and things are seen as old fashioned or forgotten. Some things for the best like racism, sexism, stereotypes but others like languages, celebrations and traditions. With some of these old ways fazing out, new ones will be created as new cultures are formed. |
Will globalization and migration affect the culture and traditions of the host nation?
- Due to Globalization many countries have adopted some aspects of the “western culture” through media, food, language and trade. Here in Oman for example, with urbanization and modernization, many Oman children are growing up exposed to western ideals and values as well as Omani. This culture has affected the Omani lifestyle in culture like the media and entertainment in Muscat, the language, education, dressing and has opened opportunities like overseas travelling and tourism and trade between nations.
How likely it will occur: - Since this is already happening in countries, the continuation of migration, population growth and globalization, many cultures will be changed and effected on a wide scale, even to the point where an entire culture is lost as the world gets smaller. |
